Find last-minute snacks for the big game, create latte art at Clerks, and taste slow mezcal at Pink Cactus. Plus, NY-style bagels arrive on Broad Street, and a deep dive on citrus cocktail specials.
Happy Thursday! If you don’t follow me on Instagram, you might have missed that I updated my list of Valentine’s Day dinners, wine tastings, bakery pre-orders, and Galentine’s events. Check that updated newsletter out below:
🏈Super Bowl Specials🏈
Petit Merci has tons of options if you’re hosting or headed to a Super Bowl party this weekend. Through 6pm today, and from 11am-6pm tomorrow, they’ll have pre-made items like spinach artichoke dip, pimento cheese, Chiefs and Eagles cookies, and even Old Fashioned and espresso martini mixers for your Super Bowl cocktails. I just stopped by to pick up some dip and a salad this morning. Check out their post below for more menu deets!
Porchetta Shop is taking pre-orders for sandwiches and specialty Italian beer until 2pm on February 8th! I don’t eat meat, but I LOVE their eggplant in scapece sandwich and their mozzarella di Bufala sandwich. Order on their website for pick up at 1pm, 3pm, or 5pm on the 9th, and see the full menu here.
Meeting at Market is having a Super Bowl watch party with a menu that includes spinach artichoke dip and fried pickles, among other game day classics. It’s first come first served, and you can find more info on the menu and price per person on the Charleston Place’s site here.

🍊Orange crush🍊
Even though it doesn’t really feel like winter anymore, we’re so lucky to have gorgeous, juicy citrus not far away in GA and FL. I’ve noticed that so many bars and restaurants are incorporating oranges into their cocktail specials recently, and here are just a few. An added bonus: that extra Vitamin C is needed when everyone seems to have a cold or the flu!
This month only, babas has blood orange margaritas and blood orange sodas!
FIG’s got an orange mocktail. Their NA “Chai Not?” drink is made with orange, chai-spiced Seedlip, walnut, and lemon.
Melfi’s Garibaldi is, in their words, “the ultimate lunch cocktail”. It’s made with Campari and oranges processed using their in-house high-speed juicer.
Husk’s Off the Beeten Path is made with pisco, dry Curacao, blood orange, beets, lemon, and egg white. A beaut!
Want to buy from and support citrus farmers in the Southeast? Community Supported Grocery delivers produce from farms like JoNina Farm in Ochlocknee, GA. I just got some cutie lil’ mandarins in my weekly CSG bundle today!
New openings
New York-style bagels on Broad Street! Bagels by KISS just opened today in the space formerly occupied by Jake’s Market. It’s led by the team behind KISS Cafe on Johns Island, and they’ve got truly delicious New York-style bagels, sandwiches, and coffee. Find their full menu on their website, and follow them on Instagram for more updates as they settle into their new home. I just stopped by today for a poppyseed bagel with scallion cream cheese. Next time, I’m trying the Long Islander, and I know my partner will be psyched to try the Jersey Boy.
Sorry for the fake out last week! Pink Bellies just announced that they’re launching their Phở King pop-up on February 26th instead of every Wednesday in February. In the meantime, check out the full menu in the Post & Courier’s recent article here and follow Phở King on Instagram for more updates!
Farewells
I’m sad to hear that Local 616 is closing on the 12th. They cited the costs of doing business due to insurance and inflation, and I know that the Brew Cellar recently announced they’d be closing on the 17th due to liquor liability insurance costs, too. Stop by both before they close!
Lil’ updates
I really love Slow Food CHS, a local non-profit that aims to promote alternatives to the industrial food system and ensure that food is good, clean, and fair for all. I went to a Slow Food CHS wine tasting in December and learned about low-intervention wines and how winemakers are using field blends to adapt to our changing climate. It was fascinating! Slow Food CHS’ next event is a mezcal tasting and slow mezcal seminar, which will be held at Pink Cactus on February 26th from 6-7:30pm. Get tickets on Eventbrite here!
If you’re part of Blackbird’s Breakfast Club (and if you’re not, why not? The monthly $25 pass pays for itself in like five coffees!) then you’ll be pleased to know that Clerks and Frannie & the Fox have recently joined the club! You can use your Breakfast Club pass at both locations to get a coffee or tea daily before 11am.
Costa just announced Apericena at Costa, a new three-course prix fixe menu from Monday through Thursday between 5 and 5:30pm. Learn more in their post below.
Here are some drinks and dishes that caught my eye this week:
Three Girls on Spring’s plant-based French onion soup burger looks absolutely divine! The burger patty is soy free and made with portobello mushroom and comes with caramelized onions, a slice of their house-made cheese, and a garlic bread bun.
In a pink mood ahead of Valentine’s Day? Island Provisions’ James Island location has a new Heart Beet Latte, made with beet root powder. I LOVE beets and actually used to make beet lattes at home back in the day, so I can’t wait to try this.
🚨🚨🚨Vegetarian Bolognese alert🚨🚨🚨 The Archer has a new walnut Bolognese with parm, cremini mushrooms, and oregano. Substack won’t let me embed the pic, unfortunately, but you can see the Bolognese perfection right here. I’ll definitely be stopping by soon!
That’s a wrap!
