Weekly Specials CHS: October 4-10, 2024
Dinners at Sullivan's Fish Camp, Vern's, and Crosby's to benefit hurricane relief efforts, plus Sean Brock is returning to Charleston, and new October Blackbird deals.
ICYMI yesterday I created a roundup of all of the local businesses collecting supplies for and donating proceeds to the Hurricane Helene relief efforts. I’m doing my best to keep it up to date as more local businesses ask for support and open up drop off sites. Please check it out here! There are SO many ways to help.
Sharing a few priority updates below on new lists of requested items at Cleats/the Whale and Millers All Day:
Shoutout to my lovely friends Allison and Christine for doing TWO rounds of donation drop offs today at Cleats! They shared that Cleats and the Whale are really in need of: camping supplies, matches, can openers, adult diapers, and toiletries. Drop off at Cleats through Monday (10am-10pm daily) and the Whale tomorrow through Sunday (noon to close). If you want to send items via Amazon, Instacart, or Costco for delivery, find the delivery address and more info here.
The owner of Millers All Day was just in Asheville on Tuesday and he’s headed back Saturday. They’re taking donations again at their James Island location TOMORROW (Friday) from 7am-4pm. Their contacts in AVL are reporting that they’re most in need of: hazmat suits, insulin, and, very sadly, body bags. They’re also requesting items like sturdy gloves, shovels, N95 masks, gently worn scrubs in size medium and large, diapers, formula, baby wipes and food, cat litter and cat food, dog food, feminine products, ibuprofen, Tylenol, solar lanterns, batteries, ramen noodles and canned food. To hear from owner Nathan Thurston about his trip on Tuesday, including how the roads were, check out their latest Reel.
I’ve also included a few newer events benefitting Hurricane Helene efforts below, too.
Weekly specials
Looking for last-minute plans tonight?
Uncork on King Street is having a Give Back Night to support the family of Annamaria Denise Fletcher, an English teacher at Boiling Springs High School in SC, who lost her life last Friday in Hurricane Helene. Learn more below and please go support if you’re out on King Street this evening!
Friday, October 4th
It’s the last dock party of the season at Crosby’s! Their food truck will be there from 6-9pm, along with beer and live music. Check out their IG post for more info, and they’ll also be accepting items for donation to take to the Asheville area during their dock party, too.
Basic Projects is hosting a patio cookout at Sullivan’s Fish Camp from 3-6pm to benefit United Way Buncombe Relief Fund! They’re accepting monetary donations and supplies, too. (Side note: their burgers will feature beef from Brasstown Beef, a farm in NC! I rarely write anything about meat in these newsletters, but their beef cattle are raised on pasture and certified by an organization called the Global Animal Partnership…they verify that Brasstown Beef raises their cows with a very high standard of welfare and care, especially compared to most cows raised for food in the U.S., who suffer in the cruel system of factory farming.)
Saturday, October 5th
Tonight is, sadly, the last service at Chasing Sage. If there are still ANY reservation left at this point, you can book a table via Resy.
Sunday, October 6th
This isn’t a food event, but there will be a 60-minute yoga flow & meditation session with live sound bath at 9am in Hampton Park, with all proceeds benefitting Beloved Asheville. Learn more here.
Meeting Green is my favorite place to buy plants (and Christmas trees!) and they’re having a fall harvest market from 11am-3pm. They’ll have food from the Wedge, live music, plus tons of pumpkins, mums, and fall plants. Learn more on their Instagram here.
Today is the first of Beautiful South’s Dim Sum Sundays!
It’s the 7th annual Lewis Hatch Chile Roast! From 1-5pm at Rancho Lewis and its courtyard, Pitmaster John Lewis will be heading up the effort to roast over 3,000 POUNDS of Hatch chiles. Lewis will be partnering with over 30 local restaurants, including 167 Raw, Bintü Atelier, Le Farfalle/Porchetta Shop, Ma'am Saab, Merci/The Drifter, Palmira BBQ, and Vern’s, among many others. General admission is free, but a $10 donation to Friends of Joseph Floyd Manor is suggested. DYK that last year, the event raised enough funds to provide groceries for over a year for Friends of Joseph Floyd Manor?! You can pre-order chiles here, and follow Rancho Lewis on Instagram for more updates.
Bar Rollins and Tobin’s Market are collaborating with California-based natural wine company Wonderwerk on a block party. Starting at 4pm there will be wines from both Wonderwerk and Tobin’s, plus live music. A portion of all bottles and merch sold will go to Southern Smoke Foundation.
Tuesday, October 8th
Little Palm is collaborating with 818 for a cocktail class! Bites are provided and you’ll learn how to create two different cocktails featuring 818 tequila. Reserve tickets on Resy here.
Thursday, October 10th
Burbage’s Grocery is doing their next wine tasting with Charleston-based Curated Wine Group! Follow Burbage’s on Instagram for more updates on timing.
Frankie Ramen pops up at Frontier Lounge every Thursday from 6pm to 1am, and this week he’s doing a veggie ramen, perfect for us vegetarians/pescatarians!
Lil updates
We were just at Vern’s last weekend, but because I insisted on everyone ordering an individual allium sourdough bread for themselves (I don’t want to share!!!!) we were ultimately too full to have dessert. Now, I’m full…of regret. Their paw paw sorbet with toasted lime meringue looks so nice.
Santi’s has launched a really fun idea: share a photo tagging Santi’s, and, at any of their locations, get a freebie on them! For the month of October, on Monday and Wednesday from 6-7pm, if you share a photo tagging Santi’s on your IG grid, you can get a meal and a marg. Find more details in their post below.
A new month means new bread and pastry menus at Baguette Magic! Here’s their bread schedule this month: round challah on Friday, sesame honey sourdough on Saturdays, and winter squash focaccia (yum!!!) on Sundays. In terms of seasonal pastries, they’ve got us hooked up with some really cool ones: mummified s’mores pop tarts, a FRENCH ONION SOUP MILK BUN, a GF banana Nutella muffin, plus some classics like their pain au chocolat and coffee cake.
Westbrook Brewing Co. just released an NA version of their key lime pie sour!
Blackbird breakdown
I was lucky to attend the launch of Blackbird last weekend at Leon’s Oyster Shop’s beautiful event space, the Oyster Shed. We celebrated the official launch of Blackbird in CHS with an oyster roast, live music, stellar food from Leon’s, and the best dessert in Charleston: Not Fried Chicken® from Life Raft Treats. Congratulations to Blackbird and Byrdhouse PR for an amazing launch event!
If you haven’t signed up for Blackbird’s Breakfast Club membership, which is a $25 monthly subscription for a daily coffee or tea from some of the best shops in Charleston, learn more here.
Okay finally, it’s a whole new month, which means new Blackbird deals! Here’s what I’ve been able to round up for this upcoming week:

Tuesday, October 8th:
Get coffee and a breakfast sandwich at either Bodega location (from 8am-4pm)!

Wednesday, October 9th:
Get a wine flight at the Tippling House! I was just there yesterday and tasted some lovely wines, including an awesome orange wine.
Estadio is doing another free wine tasting from 4-6pm with Advintage Distributing!

Friday, October 11th:
Free pasta dish during lunch at Melfi’s!
Estadio is doing another free tasting from 4-6pm with sherry, cider, and wine from De Maison Selections!
New openings
Shiki, one of my most favorite sushi spots in the city, just announced that they’re launching a Lebanese food pop-up, Hummus, on the days that they’re closed each week! Hummus, which opened on Sunday, will be operating out of Shiki’s space on Sundays and Mondays.
Chef Sean Brock makes his long-awaited return to Charleston! He announced over the weekend that he’ll be bringing Joyland, his take on retro fast food, which he runs in Nashville and Birmingham, to Charleston next. Joyland’s Charleston location will be at 145 Calhoun Street, opening date TBD.
A new Italian restaurant, Legami, will be opening this fall on the corner of King and Mary Streets! Learn more from Eater about the owner, Eldredge Ropolo, and his plans for the place.
Farewells
This is not a complete goodbye, but it sounds like things will be changing soon at Proof on King. They just re-launched in October with a new concept, a new menu, and “overall shift”, but I haven’t been in yet so not sure what that shift is!
Coming up
October 15th: De Mare Raw Bar is popping up with the Walrus at Chasing Sage’s former space starting at 6pm. There’ll be a small plate menu (with locally cultivated oysters of course!), plus Tiki-inspired cocktails from Feral Cane, a new cocktail pop-up from Charlie Bolin. Book on Resy.
October 16th: Vern’s just announced a guest chef series they’re calling Volumes. Volume 1 will be a family style tasting menu led by Chef Jeremiah Langhorne of the Dabney and Petite Cerise in D.C. I remember last year when the Vern’s folks traveled up to D.C. for a kitchen takeover at the Dabney, so now they’re swapping spots! Here’s the best news: ALL PROFITS will benefit the Southern Smoke Foundation, who are supporting F&B workers affected by Hurricane Helene. Tickets to the dinner are on Resy now. Peep the menu on slide 4 in their IG post below.
October 17th: Malagon is hosting Dan Crookston from Mean Sandwich in Seattle for a sandwich pop-up from 11am-3pm! Crookston’s wife, James Beard award-winning chef and restaurant Renee Erickson will be there to sign copies of her new cookbook, Sunlight & Breadcrumbs (which will be released on September 24th)! Make a reservation for the pop-up on Resy.
That’s a wrap!
