Lil’ updates
Alcove just announced a fun new collaboration with local brands and businesses: their All Star Smoothie Series! For their first smoothie, they’re partnering with Spicewalla and featuring Spicewalla’s gingerbread spice in a smoothie made with banana, vanilla yogurt, peanut butter, molasses, almond milk, and graham cracker crumbles. Even better, one dollar from every smoothie sold will go to the Southern Smoke Foundation.
There’s an Asheville takeover at Sightsee, as they’re selling beans from two Asheville-based coffee roasters to help support them in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. They’re selling Rowan Coffee’s Hamasho sourced from Ethiopia, and Cooperative Coffee Roasters’ Verano Tropical from Colombia.
November brings a new bread and pastry menu to Baguette Magic! Every week on Fridays they’ll be selling pumpkin-shaped sourdough loaves, cranberry walnut bread on Saturdays, and herbed sourdough on Sundays. In terms of pastries, highlights this month from their menu (which you can always find in their Instagram stories) include a berry crème brûlée cheesecake danish, apple cider “donut” muffin, gingerbread snickerdoodle cookies, and pumpkin spice cinnamon buns.
I learned from ’s newsletter that Edmund’s Oast Restaurant is hosting a toy and food drive in support of a local non-profit, the BE Impactful Foundation. Toys and food will be donated to families in North Charleston as part of the Foundation’s third annual “Be Impactful” Holiday Community festival. Through December 6th, you can bring toys and games (for ages 3-17) and dinner box foods (cornbread, stuffing, canned cranberry sauce and canned vegetables) to Edmund’s Oast Restaurant for donation.
Here’s a few dishes around town that caught my eye this week:
Vern’s pasta dishes can’t be beat, and their rigatoni with pea tendrils, pine nuts, and burrata looks heavenly.
Bar 167’s new crab roll is going to be a must-try next time I’m there. It’s made with jumbo lump blue crab tossed in horseradish aioli, celery, and lemon, and then topped with chives and fried shallots.
The Harbinger’s cranberry pumpkin loaf with rosemary glaze and walnut toffee, available as part of their Thanksgiving offerings, looks like the perfect treat.
Have you ever seen a more beautiful and autumnal hummus?! Lost Isle’s sweet potato hummus is made with smoked sweet potatoes blended with miso and tahini, topped with hazelnuts and a drizzle of brown butter.
New openings
A new bakery is opening in December in Park Circle! Cakette Bakeshop will be a largely to-go bakery with some outdoor seating and a daily pastry menu. Learn more by reading the Charleston City Paper’s recent article and following Cakette on Instagram at @cakettebakeshop!
