Weekly Specials CHS: May 31 to June 6, 2024
Kick off Pride Month at Little Palm, read and eat aperitivos at babas on Meeting, and celebrate the Harbinger's 7th birthday! Plus, book your seats at Makan, Charleston's new Malaysian-inspired spot.
Friday, May 31st
Harb-y birthday! This weekend only (through June 2nd!) the Harbinger is celebrating their seventh birthday with iced birthday cake lattes, each served with a mini version of their ‘best friend cookies’: the Harb’s signature triple chocolate chip cookie. If you’re headed there this weekend, wish the friendly folks a happy bday!
Vegan food and good beer are happening at Wind & Waves Brewing tonight from 5-8pm! Vegan food truck Bangin’ Vegan Eats will be there with Lil Sprout Vegan Desserts, so you can enjoy vegan crunchwrap supremes, BBQ jackfruit sandwiches, and peanut butter swirl brownies (drooooool).
This isn’t really a food thing (sry) but artist Gabriela Gomez-Misserian is joining Hart Jewelry this Friday at their flagship storefront on King Street from 10am to 2pm for a “Champs and Shells” event! Gabriela is Hart Jewelry’s first Artist in Residence, so will be showing some new pieces, and Hart Jewelry will be launching their new shell collection. I love Hart Jewelry and am fully obsessed with Gabriela’s studies of local restaurants (I’ve mentioned them in my Weekly Specials before, but find them here), so I’m hoping to stop by!
Saturday, June 1st
The Charleston Wine + Food Festival’s local artisan pop-up that was planned for last weekend had to take a raincheck. They’re now going to hold the event from 4-7pm today, at 635 Rutledge Avenue. Originally, food options included mobile raw bar the Swell, Krystyna's Polish Food, Papa Grande Comfort, and Zimo’s, but I’m not sure now! Still sounds like a great time, and you can follow them for more updates on Instagram at @chswineandfood.
Little Palm is doing a Little Palm Springs Pride Party from 1-4 after the Annual Charleston Pride Parade! They’ll have a drag show featuring Carmella Monroe starting at 3pm and are serving cocktail specials based on Errol Flynn, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Marilyn Monroe, with proceeds from these cocktails benefitting Charleston Pride! It seems like though the event is open to the public, only folks who reserve a lounge chair thingy at the pool will have pool access. After the Pride Party, they’re doing their usual Saturday Sessions from 4-6pm, too.
Sunday, June 2nd
Lowcountry Local First’s 16th annual Chef’s Potluck is happening at Holy City Brewing from 4-7pm, featuring some of the area’s best restaurants like FIG, Jackrabbit Filly, Lewis BBQ and Rancho Lewis, S.N.O.B., the Grocery, and a ton of others! Plus, some of my favorite local farms will be representing, including Fire Ant Farm, Peculiar Pig Farm, and Wabi Sabi Farm. Get tickets here.
From 6pm to midnight, the soon-to-be-opening sister restaurant of Berkeley’s, the Archer, is popping up at Proof for an evening of cocktails and bites!
Tuesday, June 4th
Chef Nikko Cagalanan of Kultura is hosting a dinner with three other chefs based on the Filipino word bayanihan, which means to "lift a house as a community." He’s bringing together four cultures through food: Filipino, Gambian, Peruvian and Oaxacan. There will be seatings at 5:30pm and 7pm, and you can reserve on Resy.
The Archer’s third kitchen takeover at Berkeley’s is happening tonight from 5-9pm, with a menu featuring a tomato, peach, and burrata salad, scallops with celery root puree, and pappardelle with fennel sofrito! Reservations are encouraged and available on Resy.
BYOB: bring your own book! Local author
is hosting a reading party from 6-8:30pm at babas on Meeting, inspired by the Reading Rhythms reading parties in NYC. Your ticket will include aperitivo-style snacks from babas, and there will be drinks and coffees available for purchase, too. Buy a ticket on Eventbrite - I just did!Park Circle Pride starts today and goes through June 9th! There are more than 40 events, so way too many to go through here, but I love seeing amazing restaurants and bars like Jackrabbit Filly, Stems & Skins, and Sissy Bar taking part, as well as the newly restored midcentury motel, the Starlight Motor Inn.
Wednesday, June 5th
It’s the first Wednesday of the month, so you know what that means! Aswang Noodle Club is popping up at Kultura. You can book tables on Resy.
Lil’ Updates
Just a few minutes ago, Charleston Wine + Food announced their summer series, The Sizzle, of signature wine and food events and classes. These include Juneteenth- and sauce-themed cooking classes, and beverage workshops focused on amari and Croatian wines. Check out the schedule here.
New Openings
Makan, the second location of D.C.’s Malaysian-inspired restaurant, is open for bookings! Visit Resy for reservations, and learn more about their menu on their website.
Coming up
June 8 - From 6-9pm at babas on Cannon, soon-to-be-opening European-inspired bistro Merci will be serving up a bunch of small plates from their forthcoming menu. These include dishes like focaccia with stracciatella, balsamic vinegar and honey; snapper crudo with blackberry, cucumber-ginger gelee, hazelnuts, and creme fraiche; and miso butter roasted shrimp with fennel, celery and miso aioli. The babas team will lead on wine and cocktails, and seating is first come, first served! Find more deets on their Instagram here.
June 9 - Dueling pianos and helping our local seniors? Say no more! As part of the Piccolo Spoleto festival this year, there will be a “Keys for the Cause event” benefitting Meals on Wheels of Charleston (more info on them, and how to donate here!) From 4-7pm at Charleston Area Senior Citizens on Meeting Street, there will be dueling pianists, BBQ from Swig & Swine, and an open bar! Buy your tickets here. And shoutout to my mom, who has been volunteering for Meals on Wheels both in NY and CHS for like…15 years!!!
June 10 - Kultura is hosting a live viewing of the James Beard Foundation Awards happening in Chicago, because their very own Nikko Cagalanan is a finalist in the Emerging Chef category! They’ll be doing a champagne toast and chef Nikko’s favorite Filipino hors d’oeuvres. It’s semi-formal attire, which is so fun! Buy a ticket on Resy to be part of the celebration.
June 12 - Denver-based “nontraditional Vietnamese” restaurant sắp sửa is coming to Vern’s for one night only! Find more info and reserve on Resy.
June 12 - Graft Wine Shop & Bar is partnering with wine importer and distributor Skurnik Wines to host a poolside Splash Party at Starlight Motor Inn, with bites by Estadio. The party will go from 5:30-8pm, and tickets are available on Eventbrite!
June 22 - LO-Fi Brewing’s “friend festival” called Rose Moon is happening from 6-11:30pm, and the wine and food options sound just as good as the live music! Natty wine bar Bar Rollins will be curating the wine menu, with a focus on rosé, and the folks behind Kwei Fei and Beautiful South are in charge of the six-dish menu. For dessert, Mon Frère will be popping up with ice cream! I’ve missed the past couple Mon Frère pop-ups, but everything they make looks so good! Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 day of on Eventbrite.
That’s a wrap!
