They’re an awesome follow that I recommend if you’re interested in the intersection between historical preservation and the food & bev industry here.

New openings
It’s happening!!! Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop is getting a little less tiny! In early fall, they’ll be opening up in the neighboring space with not only a full coffee program, but also seating (!!!), space for them to cook their excellent Welton’s Fine Foods pizza, and a place to drink a lil glass of vino, too. I couldn’t be more excited for the Welton’s team (and for all of us to enjoy this new space)!
If you love Spice Palette, you’ll be thrilled to know that their team is opening up a new space downtown, called Rivayat. They plan to combine “bold South Indian spices with Charleston’s fresh seafood and Southern hospitality”. Rivayat will be opening in the former Makan space on Rutledge…follow them on Instagram and stay tuned for an opening date!
Pasta pop-up Lupara and the restaurateur behind Bar George and Last Saint are joining forces to open an “Italian-ish” spot at 1117 King Street, Ok Donna. Learn more from Eater’s recent coverage, and stay tuned for them to open later this summer!
A new cute coffee shop and vintage clothing store just opened in North Charleston: Herbert’s Vintage & Coffee had their grand opening on June 28th and are serving up coffee, matcha, and vintage style Tuesday through Saturday each week. Give them a follow on Instagram for more.
French-Japanese fusion restaurant Snow Monkeys recently opened in Bar Copa’s former space on Johns Island. Peep their menu below! I’m definitely interested in their kombu-cured hamachi, their ramen niçoise, and their wild mushroom stone bowl. Hoping to pop by soon.
July Blackbird deals
Here’s a few new deals happening this month, from Owlbear Cafe in Mt. P, Cane Pazzo in Hanahan, and Katsubo in Park Circle:
^I’ve been wanting to try Katsubo’s veggie miso ramen!
Plus, Ma’am Saab’s current deal lasts through July: on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4-6pm, get a free small bite when you order a happy hour drink.
Lil updates
I’m so elated that Wine & Company is getting this national recognition: they’ve been nominated as one of the Top 10 Wine Bars in the Country by USA Today, and they need your vote!!! You can cast a vote once a day on the USA Today website here…no login required - it takes two seconds and makes a big difference!
Did y’all hear what happened to Abundant Seafood last weekend?! Their only vessel, the Amy Marie, was struck by lightning while co-owner and fisherman Mark Marhefka was 50 miles off of the coast. According to their Instagram post, they lost all electronics and navigation equipment…in fact, all of the buttons on the VHF radio were physically blown off the unit when the lightning struck! It took Mark and the crew 20 hours to get home without any navigation. Such a powerful reminder of just how much effort and risk goes into catching the local seafood that Charlestonians love.
Abundant Seafood’s dockside pickup for fresh shrimp is located at 102 Haddrell Street, if you’d like to buy fish and support them directly! Thanks to support from the community and Chef Mike Lata, the Amy Marie’s most important electronic equipment will be replaced soon.
Girl Nextdough is baking up tons of treats for Gold Star Coffee this weekend!
Pelato just announced that they’ve launched takeout and delivery through Toast. I’m headed there for the first time next week…excited to try their ravioli and their cacio e pepe.
Here are the dishes and drinks that caught my eye this week:
Be still my heart…Basic Kitchen just launched a farm veggie platter special with smoked eggplant ricotta, beet dip, cucumbers, giardinara, marinated peppers, and pita. Drooling!
Truffle lovers! Bar 167 just added truffle fries to their menu.
La Cave’s new cocktail looks ethereal: their Cloud Pine is made with Sahara Teresa 1796 Triple Aged Solara, lime juice, pineapple, Tepache, and Coco Lopez, plus it’s “finished with a coconut lime air”. Lovely!
That’s a wrap!
